Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić had talks today in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya and representatives of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
Đurić, who is on a working visit to Japan, remarked that Japan is an important partner of Serbia and that today’s talks were very positive.
The Minister, who also met with parliamentary group representatives, stated that the visit to Japan is significant for strengthening Serbia’s position in the country and that it is a prelude to high-level visits expected next month.
Đurić recalled that this is the first visit by a Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Japan since 2009, and at the same time an extraordinary opportunity to improve Serbia’s position in one of the four largest economies in the world.
Japan is an economic and technological superpower, which employs more than 5,000 people in Serbia, and the country’s investments are significant not only in technological terms, but also in organisational, economic and political terms, said Đurić.
The Minister noted the ongoing drafting of an investment protection agreement, which should provide an additional impetus for economic cooperation between the two countries.
We also discussed sensitive political topics, the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, on which we do not share the same views, but we are grateful and respect the fact that Japan abstained from voting during Priština’s attempt to join UNESCO, Đurić said.
Recalling that Serbia is the host of the Expo 2027 event, he announced that tomorrow in Osaka he will visit the Serbian Pavilion at the World Expo, which has been visited by more than 700,000 people so far.
We are working to continue building relations with Japan, we expect an acceleration of Japanese investments in Serbia, as well as the continuation of visits at the high and highest levels, the Minister underlined.
