At the event marking 15 years since the adoption of the Council of Europe’s Lanzarote Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, Žarić Kovačević recalled that Serbia ratified this Convention as early as 2010, recognising it as a fundamental instrument for strengthening the protection system.
She particularly emphasised the importance of the Lanzarote Committee, which, through two rounds of monitoring in Serbia, provided recommendations for improving legislation and practice, noting that most of the recommendations have already been implemented, while work on the remaining measures is ongoing.
She also recalled that the Government of Serbia adopted the General Protocol for the Protection of Children from Abuse and Neglect as early as 2011, and that, following international trends and standards, a new and improved protocol, tailored to the challenges of contemporary society, was adopted in February 2022.
The “I Protect You” national online platform, established by the Government of Serbia and involving several sectors, has been operating for two years with the aim of combating all forms of violence involving children, Žarić Kovačević specified.
