Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić stated today, following a meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, that Serbia and the United States are firmly committed to strengthening relations at a strategic level.
Following the meeting with Landau on the sidelines of the 55th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Antigua and Barbuda, Đurić emphasised that both sides are determined to work actively towards bringing the two countries closer together – politically, economically, in terms of security and across many other areas.
He noted that the discussions also covered the possibility of launching a strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States, as well as a range of regional issues.
The Minister particularly highlighted the position of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija and other challenges that Serbia is facing.
The head of Serbian diplomacy also underlined the importance of the personal relationship between Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and US President Donald Trump, which was reaffirmed immediately after the US President’s election. In that context, the Minister conveyed Serbia’s wish to host the President of the United States in Belgrade.
Đurić also referred to the US administration’s decision to postpone the imposition of sanctions on oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), noting that this move represents further confirmation of the quality and continuity of communication between Serbia and the United States.
