Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Minister of Justice Maja Popovic today presented the working texts of the new public prosecution laws to the rapporteurs of the Venice Commission.
At the meeting, expectations were expressed that the normative solutions, contained in the new laws on public prosecution and on the High Prosecutorial Council, will ensure greater independence of the public prosecution, which will strengthen the foundations of legal security and the rule of law.
It was emphasised that the improvement of the judicial system will create conditions for more successful protection of human rights and strengthening of the democratic capacities of the Republic of Serbia.
During the meeting with the members of this advisory body of the Council of Europe, it was stated that the expert assistance of the Venice Commission is of exceptional importance for the process of harmonising the legal framework with the adopted constitutional changes.
The rapporteurs of the Venice Commission were informed about the activities and results of the work of the Working Group, the criteria for the selection of its members, as well as about other issues related to the transparency and inclusiveness of the procedure for drafting new public prosecution laws.
Through a series of constructive discussions, new normative solutions were discussed, which should improve the position of public prosecutors, consistently implement the principle of separation of powers and strengthen the rule of law.
In addition to representatives of the Ministry of Justice, representatives of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Serbia, the Association of Public Prosecutors and Deputy Public Prosecutors of Serbia, members of the State Council of Prosecutors, as well as MPs from the ruling and opposition parties participated in the talks with the rapporteurs of the Venice Commission.
