Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, visited today, with Minister of Health Zlatibor Lončar, the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, where the most important fight is fought every day – the fight for people’s lives and where approximately 200,000 specialist examinations are performed annually.

Every day 20 patients are operated on in this healthcare institution, while more than 250 receive chemotherapy, and almost 400 receive radiation therapy.
Macut emphasised that these data best speak of the scope and importance of the work that the doctors and medical staff of the Institute perform with enormous dedication, noting that this institution is one of the most important pillars of the healthcare system.
The Prime Minister pointed out that patients from Serbia no longer have to go abroad for full-body radiation in preparation for bone marrow transplantation, because today such state-of-the-art procedures and types of treatment are applied at this institute.
Our task is to continue investing in the healthcare system, modern equipment and healthcare workers, so that every citizen of Serbia has accessible, high-quality and timely treatment when they need it most, the Prime Minister said.
He said that the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia pays special attention to the youngest patients, especially when it comes to bone marrow transplantation, and that there is a unique place for them and an adapted radiation machine that prepares them for transplantation.
Lončar noted that radiation is performed in three shifts, on eight machines.
Director of the Institute Milan Žegarac pointed out that the Clinic for Oncological Surgery performs 8,500 surgeries per year, the Clinic for Medical Oncology has 55,000 episodes of care per year, and the Clinic for Radiotherapy has 60,000 episodes of radiation per year.
