Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic stated today, summarising the results of his official visit to Sao Tome and Principe, that his stay in the Central African island state was an opportunity to continue and deepen political dialogue.
Recalling that Sao Tome and Principe was the first country to withdraw recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called "Kosovo" in 2013, Selakovic said that this year's 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations was a great opportunity to further intensify cooperation between our two countries.
He added that he had productive talks with Foreign Minister Edite do Ramos da Costa Ten-jua and Prime Minister Jorge Lopes Bom Jesus, and that, among other things, they talked about ways in which our country can help eliminate the consequences of the floods that hit this country this year.
The Minister, emphasising that Sao Tome and Principe bases its economy on agriculture, fisheries and tourism, said that it is of great importance for future cooperation that one of the interstate agreements signed today is the agreement on cooperation in agriculture.
According to him, the hosts have expressed great interest in scholarships within the "World in Serbia" project, and Serbia will increase the number of scholarships for students from that country.
Selakovic expressed hope that by the end of spring we will have an honorary consul in Sao Tome and Principe for the first time, and added that he is a friend of Serbia, a man who once studied in Belgrade as a scholarship holder of our country.
Earlier, at the press conference, the Minister stated that this visit has historical significance because for the first time, a high-ranking Serbian official is staying in Sao Tome and Principe.
Selakovic will end his several-day tour of Central African countries, during which he also visited Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, on Monday, with an official visit to Cameroon.
