In a statement to the Beta news agency, Popovic said that four significant laws on environmental protection have already been adopted in Serbia, and that another set of laws is anticipated by the end of the year, and that the experience of the Czech Republic is of great significance to Serbia-Montenegro.
Popovic said that it was agreed that the coordination will be carried out by the two ministries, and that it is necessary to define priorities for the period between 2006 and 2008. He also said that Serbia-Montenegro is a priority partner for development assistance from the Czech Ministry of Environment, and that nine projects, co-financed by the Czech Republic with €1.3 million from the state budget, are being carried out.
He also pointed out the importance of the Czech project of development assistance that covers various fields, such as the project for processing ashes from thermo-electric power plants into a by-product that can be used in the construction of roads.
Popovic said that the most important problems in Serbia, which could be solved faster with the Czech development assistance, are waste and chemical management, in which the Czech Republic has made great progress.
Popovic will tomorrow, on the second day of his three-day visit to the Czech Republic, be informed on incinerating waste technology.
According to him, the Czech cooperation with the Serbian Environmental Fund will be particularly useful, since that kind of institution has already existed for 14 years in the Czech Republic and functions well.
