Having expressed thanks for the donation, Jocic said that taking over control of the border from the Serbia-Montenegrin army by the police is part of an integrated border control process.
He pointed out that the new system of integrated border control will confirm Serbia’s readiness to become a reliable partner to Europe, adding that work on the border control strategy is near completion.
“A considerable obstacle to the process is the lack of funds which we are not fully able to provide”, Jocic said and recalled that Germany has already made several donations to the police and crime directorates of the Ministry of Interior.
Ambassador Zobel said there has been increased interest for cooperation among border police units in the past several years, because organised crime knows no state borders. According to him, by donating 12 vehicles that will be used for monitoring the border between Serbia-Montenegro and Hungary, Germany wishes to strongly support police reforms in Serbia.
Zobel recalled that since 2002, Germany has assisted police reform in Serbia with €3.5 million, adding that cooperation between Serbia-Montenegro and Germany on improving safety is one of the most significant elements in the countries’ relations.
