Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic stated today at the event marking 100 years since the beginning of the Toplica Uprising that that event occupies a special place not only in hearts and memories, but also in the entire history of the Serbian people and the Great War.
At the commemorative event in Prokuplje, Vucic and President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik laid a wreath to the Monument to the citizens of Toplica fallen in the wars from 1912 to 1918 and victims of the People’s Uprising of 1917.
The Toplica Uprising was the first and the only uprising against tyranny in any state of the occupied Europe in the First World War.
Vucic recalled that along with the inhuman oppression, the occupier tried to abolish the Serbian language, burning books and killing priests.
The ceremony was attended by Speaker of the Serbian parliament Maja Gojkovic, ministers in the Serbian government, the head of the Toplica administrative district, the president of the municipality of Prokuplje, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the associations for preserving tradition of Serbia’s liberation wars and many citizens.
After addressing the citizens, the Prime Minister visited the exhibition "Toplica Uprising 1917- 100 years later" at the Toplica National Museum.
