To mark the World Day of Safety at Work, representatives of the Serbian government, trade unions, Serbian Union of Employers and International Labour Organisation (ILO) laid down 69 helmets today to memorialise the 69 workers who lost their lives in 2004 because of unrespected labour safety measures.
Assistant Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Zivka Djuric said that this should be a warning to the Serbian public, state, employers and unions to take all necessary measures to ensure safety at work and reduce injuries as much as possible.
Representative of the ILO Annie Rice expressed satisfaction with the Serbian government’s response to the challenges of preventing accidents at work through the development of labour inspection, encouraging employers to protect workers and stimulating workers and trade unions to play their role in respecting the Law on Safety and Health Care at Work.
