Speaking at a press conference held on the occasion of the World Health Day marked on April 7, Milosavljevic said that on an annual basis, the state currently sets aside €140 per capita for the health care, which is three times more than in 2000, but still very little.
He said that the Ministry, in association with UNICEF and the UNDP, will work intensively on improving health care for mothers and children, as the slogan of this year's World Health Day is "Make Every Mother and Child Count".
The Minister recalled that national strategies for poverty reduction, prevention of HIV transmission and a children's action plan were prepared last year, with pilot projects underway in Pirot, Sjenica and Kragujevac. He added that the strategies for tobacco control and assistance to Roma population are currently being prepared.
Head of World Health Organisation’s (WHO) office in Serbia-Montenegro Luigi Migliorini said that all countries, either poor or developed, are dealing with the health care problems of mothers and children.
UNICEF Director for Serbia-Montenegro Ann Lee Swenson said that some of the priorities of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 include poverty reduction, fight against HIV and reducing death rate among children under five.
According to her, nearly 11 million children die every year before the age of five. Assistance and adequate care encompassing pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period are keys to the adequate treatment of mother and child health problems.
