Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management Ivana Dulic-Markovic, who opened the workshop, said that the US’s expert assistance is crucial for the ministry.
Dulic-Markovic explained that the foundation gave scholarships to Serbian researchers to spend several months at three US universities: Cornell University, the University of Texas, and the University of Iowa.
She said while in the US, the graduates of veterinary and agricultural faculties from Serbia were shown new methods and laboratory technique procedures, and took part in seminars and workshops in the areas of biotechnology, microbiology, plant pathology, food safety, and plant and animal disease control.
According to Attaché for Agriculture at the US Embassy to Belgrade Hasan Ahmed, this programme gave researchers and scientists from Serbia and the US the opportunity to work together on a “one-to-one” level.
Ahmed went on to point out that of the 84 recipients of the Norman E. Borlaug Foundation’s scholarship for international science and technology, 23 came from Serbia-Montenegro.
