Vladeta Jankovic
In a statement to the Tanjug agency, Jankovic underlined that the remaining cases of Hague indictees would be resolved as previously, through voluntary surrender to The Hague, as we do not wish to create “a negative atmosphere and resentment”, which could disable the work of the government and endanger the country’s stability.
When asked what conditioned such a large number of voluntary surrenders to the tribunal over a short time period, Jankovic explained that those persons realised that it was in the interest of the country as well as their personal interest.
Those people, Jankovic said, will be given an opportunity to prove their innocence with the help of the state, as it is natural that every country stands by its citizens who are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
According to him, the model of voluntary surrender to The Hague has been extremely successful, and after the departure of generals Sreten Lukic and Nebojsa Pavkovic to The Hague, our country can expect new demands and obstacles. The extradition of General Ratko Mladic will be requested, just as Croatia is now being conditioned regarding General Ante Gotovina, stated Jankovic. He said that the government would continue with activities aimed at determining whether Mladic is in this country, and if it is so he will be sent to The Hague.
Speaking of the beginning of talks on the status of Kosovo-Metohija, Jankovic assessed that readiness expressed by the international community in recent months for Belgrade to be an equal participant in those negotiations was of great importance.
