Serbian Minister of International Economic Relations Milan Parivodic signed today in Brussels, on behalf of the Serbian government, an agreement on trade in textile goods between Serbia and the European Union.

Parivodic said in a statement to the official web site of the Serbian government that this is the first agreement Serbia has signed with the EU and voiced hope that the Serbian parliament will ratify the agreement in April so that it could become effective on July 1.
He said that the EU has drastically changed its attitude towards Serbia since Serbia-Montenegro is expecting a favourable assessment of the feasibility study. After that, the Serbia-Montenegrin Council of Ministers should initiate negotiations on the EU stabilisation and association agreement and added that Serbia must use that chance. According to Parivodic, Serbia must mobilise all human potentials in order to adequately respond to this challenge.
Parivodic recalled that Serbia's textile industry makes up around seven percent of GDP and that 70 percent of Serbia's textile goods are exported to EU countries. Parivodic explained that the EU applied a certain quota regime for several types of textile goods from Serbia, but that regime covered only 25 percent of exported goods. Under the new agreement, the remaining 75 percent will also be exported to the EU free of customs barriers.
Speaking about the importance of this document, the Minister stressed that Serbia's textile industry will become more competitive and will get equal status to those industries of other countries that already have free access to the EU market.
At the same time, this document sends a clear message to domestic textile producers to try to locate foreign partners as soon as possible for the realisation of textile export agreements.
He said that Serbia cannot fully compete on the raw textiles market but that when it comes to the finished garment industry there is a big potential for the Serbian economy. He pointed out that this is what drives the need to look for foreign partners as soon as possible for the sake of joint production and placement of Serbian-made products on the EU market.
