Obradovic stated that this was achieved by including marginalised groups in the education system and increasing the participation of the Roma population in elementary and secondary schools, as well as at faculties.
He stressed that computer literacy of students has been improved, project “Second Chance” was implemented enabling education during the entire life time, as well as a number of other projects aimed at boosting the quality and efficiency of education.
During the meeting, the participants agreed that education is of paramount importance for Serbia and a basis of its future development, therefore there should be more investment in advancing it.
Vassiliou voiced her pleasure at the fact that the EU 2020 Strategy considerably increased the budget for European educational programmes.
She proposed a possibility of including the Serbian education system in European programmes, as well as Serbia’s participation in expert bodies at all EU gatherings, noting that these options will increase even further once Serbia acquires candidate status.
At the meeting they agreed that educational goals set by the Serbian government are fully in line with the EU 2020 Strategy and they imply more children included in preschool education, a considerable increase in the number of university students, better functional literacy and greater participation of adults in various forms of learning.
A precondition for improving the quality of the Serbian education system is greater funds earmarked for education and science in the Serbian GDP, the statement adds.
