Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier today agreed that the Security Council should hold a session at the beginning of March to discuss the situation in Kosovo, when Belgrade will formally raise the issue of the formation of the Kosovo security forces.
In a statement to Fonet news agency from New York Jeremic said that in his meetings with Zannier and top UN officials he talked about the implementation of the six item plan for Kosovo and strongly protested the formation of the Kosovo security forces.
He said that he conveyed Belgrade’s expectation that the implementation of the six-item plan will start soon, adding that Zannier is due to visit Belgrade next week.
Then we will begin talks about the steps to be taken in February so that the six-item plan becomes fully implemented by the next Security Council session, he said.
The Minister told UN officials that the formation of the Kosovo security forces is undermining peace and stability in the region.
He met with several of the permanent representatives to the UN from various countries and informed them about Belgrade’s preparations for the procedure which the International Court of Justice will begin for establishing the legal validity of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
I asked them and their countries to take an active part in this process, said Jeremic, adding that 2009 will be a year of intense diplomatic activity for Serbia because the Kosovo issue must be kept in the focus of the international community.
