Massari assessed that there is visible progress in Serbia’s cooperation with the International Tribunal in The Hague, that the principle of voluntary surrender of indictees has produced results and that authorities in Serbia have regained credibility, which had suffered damage, before the international community.
Stojkovic underlined that Serbia’s obligations towards the Hague tribunal would be fulfilled in a relatively short time period.
Minister Stojkovic and Ambassador Massari agreed that this country is on the right path towards receiving a positive assessment of the Feasibility Study, and that conditions are being created so that the tribunal could transfer a larger number of war crime cases to local courts. The OSCE will monitor the trials before local courts and submit a report on the implementation of European standards once a month to The Hague.
Massari announced that the OSCE would still offer aid to the prison system reform process and a training program for those working in prisons in Serbia.
Minister Stojkovic expressed his belief that by mid-year the Serbian Assembly will adopt a new law on enforcement of penalties and informed Massari that the Ministry of Justice is already preparing sub-acts which will enable the implementation of this law.
