Zoran Milanovic and Ivica Dacic
At a joint press conference with Milanovic, Dacic voiced hope that the two countries will resolve the outstanding issues in the mutual interest, in order to make life easier for citizens.
According to Dacic, the past cannot be changed, but we can have a significant impact on the present and future relations between Serbia and Croatia.
The meeting with Milanovic was positive, Dacic said adding that it is extremely important that the governments of Serbia and Croatia cooperate within their jurisdictions as provided by their respective constitutions and laws.
The Serbian Prime Minister said that he and the Prime Minister of Croatia reached an agreement that the relations between the two countries should be directed towards normalisation after a certain cold period.
During today's meeting, we talked about the problems of the past, regional economic cooperation and European integration, Dacic said noting that it was agreed to launch a joint working committee dealing with a whole range of issues – from refugees to prosecution of war crimes and determining the boundaries.
In terms of economic cooperation, we want a market openness between the two countries as well as increasing foreign exchange, which now stands at €700 million, said Dacic.
He said that he received assurances from Milanovic that Croatia supports Serbia's European path, adding that in this regard the ministries of foreign affairs of the two countries will cooperate.
There are many questions on which we do not share the same views and which touch the emotions of both sides, but it is absurd that the two countries that are in the immediate neighbourhood do not have well-developed relations and that do not solve problems to the benefit of all citizens, said Dacic.
As for the acquittal by the ICTY for Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, he said that Serbia expects all who committed crimes against the Serbian or Croatian people to be prosecuted.
Milanovic called on all countries in the region to develop mutual cooperation and restraint in all that can negatively affect the relations in the region.
He said that some things must be approached soberly and added that he came to Belgrade to see whether Serbia and Croatia can cooperate even better, given that these two countries are neighbouring countries that have gone through a difficult period over the past two decades.
Croatia supports Serbia on its path towards the EU because it is in our interest too, Milanovic said, adding that Serbia will have a more difficult path of European integration than Croatia.
Serbia can count on the help of Croatia on this path, he reiterated
After a two-hour meeting of the prime ministers of Serbia and Croatia, a working lunch was occasioned for the delegations of the two countries.
