Assistant Minister of the Interior and head of the Sector for Emergency Situations Predrag Maric said today at a session of the Serbian parliament’s Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality that the education of women in terms of timely response in crisis situations is a necessity.
Maric said that women are in the greatest danger when an unexpected disaster strikes, but are also the first to react in such situations in order to protect their families.
He noted that pre-emptive activities and awareness of the population are the main preconditions for mitigating or preventing a catastrophe.
UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia William Infante said that Serbia must develop an activity plan in prevention of and protection from catastrophes, as well as involve women in the process.
Infante underlined that greater participation of women in the decision-making process and the creation of measures for their active participation in crisis response is critical.
He recalled that Serbia is a regional leader in terms of inclusion of women in the police, and this good example should be repeated and women included in prevention and resolution of problems in emergency and critical situations.
The session of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality was held on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Reduction.
