Addressing the public after the session, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić, Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić, Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces Milan Mojsilović and Director of the Security Intelligence Agency Vladimir Orlić, Vučić said that Serbia is aware of the complexity of the position it faces in the region of South-East Europe.
According to him, this complexity will become even more pronounced, as it is clear following the action in Venezuela that the international legal order and the UN Charter no longer function, that the world is dominated by the rule of force, where might makes right, and that this has become the only principle of contemporary politics today.
The President said that Serbia will continue equipping and training its armed forces and that, in the coming period, the country’s military capabilities will be significantly strengthened, expressing confidence that they will be doubled over the next year and a half.
In addition to human resources, which will be increased by 30%, all other capacities will be raised by 100%. Part of the funds will be secured domestically, while part will be procured abroad, Vučić specified.
He also noted that a decision had been adopted on the method of staffing special units, as well as on further armament and equipment. Additional investments in the domestic defence industry are envisaged, and new measures have been adopted to replenish reserves – not only of food and water, but also of ammunition.
At the same time, the President said that the arrival of the first 85,000 tonnes of crude oil is expected no later than 15 January, that the refinery should resume operations on 17 or 18 January, and that the production of oil derivatives should begin on 25 or 26 January.
Vučić called on the management of Gazprom, NIS and Hungary’s MOL to finalise the purchase and sale agreement as soon as possible, in order for Serbia to be able to exit the sanctions regime.
He also referred to the US action on the territory of Venezuela, stressing that Serbia wishes to cultivate friendly relations with the United States of America, but that in this case, as he underlined, it constitutes a violation of international law.
The President said that the National Security Council had instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Security Intelligence Agency and the Military Intelligence Agency to prepare analyses of the new US national security strategy.
