Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, attended today, at the Palace of Serbia, plenary talks between the Serbian and European Union delegations led by President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić and President of the European Council António Costa.
At a joint news conference with Costa held after the plenary talks and a tête-à-tête meeting, Vučić recalled that total trade in goods and services between Serbia and the EU amounts to €58 billion.
According to him, Serbia today accounts for 57.1% of the total exports of the Western Balkans to the EU, demonstrating the progress of the domestic economy, which would not have been possible without European investments and free trade with the EU.
He stressed that it is also very important for Serbia to comply with the rules that the EU has set for candidate countries, stating that he and Costa discussed various issues – from the judiciary to the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media, including the provisions of recommendations for the upcoming elections.
In this regard, the Serbian President noted that four laws have been adopted, while two more key laws will be passed regarding the financing of campaigns and political activities and political organisations.
Costa reaffirmed the EU’s continued commitment to Serbia’s EU perspective, emphasising that enlargement is a geostrategic necessity for Europe, based on building trust.
The President of the European Council stressed that this is an investment in the peace, stability, security and prosperity of our continent, for the benefit of all European citizens, as well as for the benefit of the people of Serbia.
Enlargement is based on building trust and Serbia has a demanding road ahead, but the path is clear and it should focus on three main priorities – fostering good neighbourhood relations and regional cooperation, aligning with EU policies and values, and delivering the ongoing reforms, he said.
Costa said that the process of Serbia’s accession to the EU needs the full mobilisation of Serbian society, noting that Serbia has the support of the EU on its path to European integration.
The President of the European Council expressed his condolences for the loss of a member of the Serbian Armed Forces who died while on an international mission in Lebanon.
