A statement by the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration says that Nikolic thanked World Bank representatives Edgardo Mosqueira, John Furnaro and Srdjan Svircev for the support to date and assistance of the World Bank through donations and the work of experts.
During the meeting, the Secretary of State pointed to the poor state of the Serbian judiciary and underlined that the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration will not implement a new reform, but that consequences for which the entire judicial system in Serbia is suffering, as well as citizens, must be fixed in the shortest time possible.
He added that the good things made during the reform, such as the Judicial Academy, will remain.
He said that the Ministry will do everything for the courts to be independent, judges independent and skilled, professional and able to enforce law responsibly and impartially and restore public trust in the judiciary.
We will respect the presumption of innocence, and we will ask that from others too, as well as all the standards that guarantee the realisation of human rights and freedoms. We will do everything so that Serbia becomes a state in which there will be only one rule, and that is the rule of law, Nikolic said.
World Bank representatives underlined that it is necessary to create a strategy for development of the judiciary in the next five years and an action plan for the strategy’s implementation.
They underlined that the World Bank will offer to the Ministry all the necessary support for the preparation of these documents.
At the end of the meeting, Edgardo Mosqueira said that the World Bank in the previous years had not have communication with this Ministry at the highest level and voiced his hope that the cooperation will look up in the near future, it is added in the statement.
