Last night, at the conclusion of the 66th UN General Assembly session, Jeremic symbolically took over the presidency from Qatar’s representative Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser who handed him the gravel he used during his presidency.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was also present at the session and he greeted both Nasser and Jeremic.
After assuming the duty, Jeremic told Tanjug news agency that during his presidency Serbia’s interests will be represented in a time of great complexity.
This is a great opportunity for any country in this position. Through the General Assembly, Serbia will be in the spotlight and a number of talks and negotiations will go through it, Jeremic observed.
He noted that he expects the next 12 months to be very intensive in terms of diplomatic activities, bearing in mind the situation in the entire world, adding that he will present the agenda of the session and the priorities of Serbia’s presidency today.
The high debate will be held on 25 September and in line with the tradition, the first to address world leaders will be Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Afterwards, the session will be addressed by US President Barack Obama, followed by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.
