The officials discussed the importance of cooperation of Serbia with the ICTY and the importance of war crimes trials for regional stability and reconciliation.
The results made by the Republic of Serbia in these fields are of great importance for these processes, bearing in mind that Serbia has achieved full cooperation with the ICTY, and that a large number of procedures are completed or are underway before the local courts.
Ljajic also expressed his doubt that the Tribunal’s treatment of the case of Ramush Haradinaj contributed to the reconciliation process, bearing in mind that in this case, despite huge problems with the protection of witnesses, the accused Haradinaj was allowed to be politically active during his provisional release.
Also, the President of the National Council pointed to the problems in the case of Vojislav Seselj, in which the first instance verdict has not been reached in nine years.
Llajic and Hammarberg discussed the investigation of human organ trafficking in Kosovo-Metohija.
Ljajic request again that a thorough and independent investigation is conducted that would lead to establishing the full truth and punishing those responsible.
It was stressed that in order to achieve these goals, the cooperation of all relevant state institutions in the region is required, as well as adequate protection of witnesses.
At the same time, the President of the National Council for Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague noted that in certain political circles in the international community there is no political will to realise these goals.
