The European Council granted Serbia candidate status for EU membership tonight.

The decision has been announced at a press conference tonight by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
The European Council endorsed the recommendation of the Council of Ministers of 28 February and decided to grant the candidate status to Serbia.
