European Parliament endorses giving candidate status to Serbia in March

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament supported today the Draft resolution on Serbia's progress in the process of European integration which calls for the European Council to grant Serbia the candidate status for EU membership in March.

Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin presented the Draft resolution to the Committee, who advocated that apart from granting Serbia the candidate status, the date of commencement of negotiations for EU accession should also be set.
Kacin told reporters after the debate in the European Parliament that he is satisfied with the reception of the Draft resolution.
We expect that on 1 March, when the Foreign Affairs Committee will adopt the amended text of the resolution, this will positively influence the European Council which will decide on Serbia's candidacy on the same day, he said.
Members of the Committee will submit amendments to the text of the resolution by the end of January and will discuss them on 29 February. The final version of the document will be voted for by the Committee on 1 March.
