In an address to the public following the announcement of the decision by the EU Council to postpone Serbia’s acquisition of candidate status until March 2012, Tadic underlined that regardless of the difficulties the EU is facing, Serbia belongs in Europe in terms of its culture, economy, politics, security and in any other sense.
He stressed that Brussels’ decision is not a defeat of Serbia’s state politics, highlighting that Serbia will not give up on EU accession because it has a future in the EU and because the Serbian people belong in the European family.
Tadic reiterated that Serbia will not recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence, either implicitly or explicitly, and that it will not give up on the demand that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 be respected when it comes to Pristina’s regional representation.
The Serbian President voiced his belief that the Resolution offers a possibility that a long-term sustainable solution be found for Kosovo and that human rights and ethnic communities are protected, peace and stability established and a solution reached for the future of the southern Serbian province.
If Resolution 1244 was an argument which Kosovo used at the International Court of Justice and the basis for the decision of a number of states not to recognise Kosovo, then there is no reason why Serbia should be asked to stop referring to this document when deciding on Pristina’s regional representation, Tadic underlined.
He repeated his appeal to citizens to withdraw from the barricades in the north of Kosovo because in this way they are not defending vital national interests. He also called upon the international community not to bring into question the lives of Serbian citizens in Kosovo-Metohija.
EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy stated earlier today in Brussels that the following EU assessment on granting Serbia EU candidate status will be announced on 12 February 2012, while the EU Council will make the final decision in March.
