Opening the debate in Parliament, Cvetkovic stressed that these moves were aimed at changing the reality in the field, causing unrest among the Serbian population and installing institutions of Pristina in the north of the province.
The goal of the provisional authorities in Pristina was to cause incidents and provoke the local population, thus aggravating Serbia’s position, he reiterated.
In essence, the goal was to provoke Serbia and disrupt the dialogue that began to yield results, he noted.
Nevertheless, Belgrade will remain adamant in its stance that it is possible to solve problems in the province in a peaceful and democratic manner, Cvetkovic observed.
With its diplomatic activities Serbia halted Pristina’s brutal attempt to impose unilateral solutions; however, despite the temporary and partial stall of threats, issues still remain which the Serbian authorities must face and define a path of action.
Our main tool in the struggle for Kosovo-Metohija is dialogue, and our choice is not to make any move that would affect the survival of Serbs in the province and destabilise the region, the Prime Minister observed.
He stressed that the international community and interim institutions in Pristina must comprehend that the Serbian government will never recognise the unilaterally declared independence of its southern province and that under no circumstances or blackmail will it do so.
Cvetkovic called upon the international community to make every effort to preserve peace in Kosovo-Metohija, acting in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and demanded a return to the previous state of affairs and a reaffirmation of dialogue.
The Prime Minister made an appeal to citizens in Kosovo-Metohija, most of all to Albanians, to refrain from violence, and sent a message to Kosovo Serbs to be united and to do no favours to extremists who wish to seize Kosovo from Serbia.
He also called for unity among MPs advising them to accept the proposed declaration of the Serbian Parliament on the current state of affairs in Kosovo-Metohija following unilateral and violent moves by the interim self-government institutions in Pristina, submitted by the Serbian government.
The emergency session was summoned at the request of the government and was attended by President Boris Tadic, a number of ministers, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic, Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac and Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Goran Bogdanovic, as well as head of the Serbian team for talks with Pristina Borislav Stefanovic.
The parliament session was observed by representatives of the international community in Belgrade.
Moreover, representatives from the embassies of Russia, China, India, Slovakia, the United States and Algeria also monitored the debate from the balcony of the great hall of the Serbian Parliament building.
Prior to the session, the parliamentary Committee for Kosovo-Metohija accepted the proposed declaration on principle.
The Committee will reconvene during the day to speak out on the proposals and amendments that will be submitted to this document.
