Dacic stated at an extraordinary session of the Serbian parliament’s Committee for Defence and Security that the police acted in a somewhat restrained manner during the riots because they wanted to avoid bloodshed on Belgrade streets.
He reiterated that a total of 259 persons were detained for having taken part in the riots, of whom 114 were brought before the investigating judge and 16 were charged with misdemeanour conduct.
Dacic stressed that on 10 October, despite constant attacks on the police which lasted from 8.30 to 15.30, all participants of the Pride Parade were protected and they were even taken in police vehicles to several police stations in the city.
Speaking about preparation for the Pride Parade, Dacic noted that the Ministry of the Interior made a good evaluation and identified 56 people who had threatened the organisers of the parade through the Facebook social network.
He added that on 10 October around 4.00 in the morning, the police organised three security rings in the city centre around the venue where the parade was to be held and stopped the traffic so that more than 1,000 participants in the parade could walk the streets safely.
The Pride Parade itself passed off without incident, Dacic highlighted and reiterated that according to police estimates, there were around 6,000 protestors against the parade and he described them as members of nationalist and extremist groups.
The Minister specified that 173 policemen were injured during the riots, six of whom gravely, and 31 protestors, one gravely.
He underlined that the police are not the ones who approve any such gatherings, and that they only have the right to forbid them if the conditions are right, and that the participants in the Pride Parade were allowed to gather on 10 October because this is their constitutional right.
