Minister of Public Administration and Local Self Government Milan Markovic said today that after the adoption of amendments to the Law on free access to information of public importance, no information will be hidden from the public.
Addressing the parliament, Markovic said that under the amended law the Public Information Commissioner will be able to penalize those responsible for withholding public information.
The Commissioner will be authorised to hand out fines to heads of bodies which fail to meet their obligations under the Law on free access to public information and to charge successive fines up to five times until the authorities in question make the information available.
The fines for violations of the law will be up to RSD 200,000 for those responsible for withholding information.
Markovic said that infringement proceedings will be initiated against officers who refuse to make the information available.
The Ministry has so far submitted more than 140 misdemeanour cases against officers who have violated the law, he said.
He also recalled that the Law on free access to information was adopted in 2004, and has been amended in 2007 and 2009.
