Elaborating on the proposed amendments to Serbian MPs, Dacic said that their adoption will improve the rights and the position of refugees and create conditions for their full integration in society.
He said that the proposed amendments will enable the integration of refugees who are not able to return to their homes, because they fear persecution or discrimination.
The Minister explained that ways to solve their housing issues have also been envisaged, adding that refugees will also be granted funds to renovate their homes, purchase construction material, village houses and similar.
Serbia provides shelter to the largest number of refugees in the whole of Europe. We are one of the five countries with a long-term refugee situation and the only such country in Europe, Dacic said adding that in the past two decades over 500,000 refugees came to Serbia. Their number declined over time to 86,000 and we expect this to reduce even further, he noted.
Dacic stressed that Serbia sees social integration as a permanent way to solve the refugee situation, noting that the proposed amendments envisage a normative framework for assistance in the form of solving the housing issue for those who have decided to stay in Serbia.
The Minister added that this is particularly important now that all refugee centres are to be closed down, with a considerable number of refugees still living there.
