Speaking at a joint press conference with Reinfeldt after the submission of the application, Tadic said that this day is of historic importance for Serbia.
During the past ten years our goal has been to join the EU and that was not simply an exercise, but a symbolic act as well, the Serbian President said, highlighting that the idea of Zoran Djindjic, that Europe means dedication to lasting democracy, have been confirmed today.
He said that over the next few years Serbia will fulfil all requirements for becoming a full EU member.
We will continue with our efforts to arrest all war indictees, Tadic reiterated, and thanked Prime Minister Reinfeldt, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and all members of the Swedish government for its support of Serbia.
Reinfeldt noted that the road towards EU membership is long and requires large-scale reforms, but added that Serbia will undoubtedly meet all the conditions.
He also voiced his personal pleasure for having received Serbia’s application.
Asked what Serbia will bring to the Union, Reinfeldt said that Serbia is the path of energy and stability in south-eastern Europe that posed a problem for some time, but once this part of the region is integrated, Europe itself will be more stable.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn also attended the application ceremony.
A meeting was held following the ceremony, in which Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic, Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic and head of the Serbian EU Integration Office Milica Delevic also participated.
EU candidacy is the first step in the EU integration process, ensuing right after the enforcement of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement or during its ratification.
The application for candidate status will be included in the agenda for the EU Council of Ministers’ meeting and if all 27 EU members endorse it, it will be forwarded to the European Commission.
The Commission will then send Serbia a detailed questionnaire and, once Serbia answers it, the Commission will give its reply.
