At a press conference Barrot said that this is a historical moment in relations between the EU and the Western Balkans, adding that visa liberalisation will enable Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian citizens to freely travel across Europe, thus contributing to the Europeanisation of their countries.
The visa liberalisation proposal will also be forwarded to the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers, which are expected to reach a decision in November.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic also went to Brussels to meet with Barrot and Rehn.
A European Commission collegium unanimously decided yesterday in Strasbourg to forward an official proposal to the Council of the European Union regarding the abolition of visa restrictions for Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro as of January 1, 2010.
