Presenting the report on the Ministry’s work in 2008 at the session of the parliamentary Committee on Defence and Safety, Dacic specified that over two tonnes of narcotics were seized last year and 3,318 criminal acts uncovered.
He said that when it came to organised financial crime, four highly organised criminal groups were uncovered and 62 persons arrested.
He noted that the Ground Safety Zone remained safe and stable, as well as municipalities in southern Serbia, adding that nine members of the Gnjilane criminal group were taken into custody.
The Minister said that attacks on Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija continue, adding that pressure is being exerted on Serbs and other non-ethnic Albanians to move out of the province.
Dacic noted that police efficiency in uncovering hi-tech crimes increased by 20%, particularly when it came to forgery and abuse of credit cards
He emphasised that police efficiency in uncovering eco-crimes also increased by 29%, adding that all kidnappings were solved while efficiency in solving attempted murders increased by 77.4%.
Dacic added that 66% of thefts were solved, 57.5% of severe thefts and 66.7% of robberies.
There were 71 murders in 2008, 54 brutal murders and 172 attempted murders, which is a slight fall compared with the previous year, when 88 murders, 55 brutal murders and 203 attempted murders were recorded.
Dacic said that results were achieved in fighting human trafficking, organised property crime, while ammunition smuggling channels were cut.
He also pointed out that there were some 600 cases of border violation, mostly with Hungary.
Serbia signed agreements on the fight against organised crime with Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia and Italy, he recalled.
Police work is hard and responsible; the Minister stressed and noted that the fight will not be successful if there is no mutual trust between the police and the citizens.
He also presented the data that the number of traffic accidents decreased by 4.4% while the number of victims killed in traffic accidents decreased by over 7%.
Dacic said that all necessary regulations for Serbia’s inclusion on the Schengen white list were adopted so we can certainly can expect visa liberalisation.
Members of the Committee on Defence and Safety honoured slain police officer Vladimir Grandic with a one-minute silence.
