Jeremic said that the reconfiguation was done with the consent of the UN Security Council and based on Resolution 1244, which guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia.
He pointed out that the EULEX mission is status neutral and added that the policy of Mirko Cvetkovic’s government in Kosovo had not changed and is a continuum with the policy of the previous government.
The Minister called on unity from all factors on the political scene to preserve Kosovo and added that Serbia under no circumstances will give up its sovereignty, which is one of the government’s top priorities.
When speaking of the historical state and national issue - Kosovo-Metohija, we need to be united and the oppositon needs to support the government that won the election and took responsibility for creating the policies, Jeremic said.
Jeremic called on the opposition to support the government’s platform, aimed at protecting the state constitutional order. He added that the year 2008 was the year of great challenges, during which Serbia grew stronger and showed the whole world it is a mature society that is capable of rejecting the severest blows by using democracy, law and the Constitution.
In 2008 the country survived an attempt at seccession through the illegal declaration of Kosovo’s independence. Serbia reacted peacefully, diplomatically, legallly and politically thus setting a precedent in the history of the Balkans, said the Minister.
He said that the most important step Serbia took in the fight to safeguard Kosovo was presenting the issue of seccession before the International Court of Justice.
We may count on the support of a large number of countries and a decision by the court about the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence will set a precedent for all other similar cases, said Jeremic.
