Since February 2000, the export of Serbian steel was additionally burdened by a 15.4 percent anti-dumping duty, reads a statement from the Serbian Ministry of International Economic Relations. After the EU enlargement in May this year, the domestic producers had to pay additional taxes to sell their products in all 25 EU countries, which decreased exports as well as their competitiveness on the EU market.
Since 2000, the line ministries in cooperation with Serbian steel maker Sartid, that got privatised and became US Steel Serbia, launched a series of initiatives to abolish the additional duties. In June 2004, Serbian Minister of International Economic Relations Predrag Bubalo sent a demand to line institutions of the 25 EU members as well as the European Commission to discontinue the anti-dumping duties for Serbia, reads the statement.
