At a session of the Serbian parliament’s board for relations with Serbs abroad, Sreckovic said that an incorrect policy towards the Diaspora has been implemented during the past 50 years and it is necessary to establish new relations, based on partnerships with Serbs living abroad.
He said that more than 3 million Serbs live abroad and Serbia received $4.9 billion in Diaspora remittances last year, 13.1% of the GPD.
The Minister stressed that the law on the Diaspora will increase the Ministry’s authority, adding that Serbia is entering a peaceful economic and political period and it can be expected that the country will draw new investors.
Information about the position of Serbs in Croatia was examined at the session and the problems in claiming property and social rights being faced by Serbs who were forced to leave their homes in Croatia in the period from 1991 to 1995 were also discussed.
Serbs in Croatia also have problems such as individual cases of assault, biased trials for alleged war crimes and the existence of undisclosed allegations.
