At a press conference on the annual European Commission’s report on Serbia’s progress, Rehn said that if Serbia meets the necessary preconditions, it can acquire EU candidate status next year.
He recalled that the Serbian government’s top priorities are the EU integration process and reforms needed in this respect.
The EU Commissioner also stressed that Serbia has an important role in the region and the European Commission requires a constructive stance from it regarding the EULEX mission in Kosovo.
According to the report, the Serbian government made considerable progress in its cooperation with the Hague tribunal by arresting Radovan Karadzic, however two more Hague indictees are still at large.
The European Commission stated that it is of top priority for Serbia to consistently implement both the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU and the Transitional Trade Agreement, since it now has competent authorities and has strengthened its mechanisms for EU integration.
As for conditions necessary for visa abolition, there is still a lot to be done, particularly regarding Serbian law.
