At the end of the debate on amendments to the Bill on the state border, Dacic stressed that the law aims to open the border for the free movement of goods and people and close it to crime and illegal activities.
He stressed that Serbia’s inclusion in the Schengen “white list“depends on the speed at which laws are adopted and implemented, as well as on the date when new the passports will be put into use.
Visa-free travel to Europe is in the interest of both our state and our citizens, said the Minister, adding that as of November 1, the old passports will no longer be issued, but the Ministry of Interior proposes that they remain valid until end-2009.
According to him, Serbian parliament is to confirm this decision because it was originally proposed that the old passport remain in force until December 31 this year.
The Minister recalled that several years ago the state implemented the integrated border management system which led to demilitarisation of the border.
Serbia needs quality state border crossings, said Dacic, adding that Serbia is trying to reach agreement with neighbouring countries to enable Serbian citizens to cross said borders with their IDs only, or at least without visas.
According to him, Serbia will open new crossings on the borders with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
Dacic said there are no police at the administrative border with Kosovo because for Serbia that is not regarded as a border crossing, adding that the police within Serbia have the right to replace the seal on Republic of Kosovo passports with that of Serbia’s.
Today’s parliament agenda includes budget revision.
