The decision on whether Serbia’s initiative will be added to the agenda will be made by the General Committee at a meeting tomorrow, and then within a few days the General Assembly will discuss the proposed agenda at a plenary session.
The exposition of Serbia’s request to add the initiative on Kosovo to the agenda says that the declaration of independence has given rise to a series of controversies and divides the international community and that the ICJ’s opinion will greatly help to alleviate tensions, since the court is the supreme judicial organ of the UN.
If Serbia’s request is placed on the agenda, it will be discussed along with other items dealing with justice and international law, but it is so far not known when it might be debated.
If it comes to that, Serbia will have to persuade as many UN members as possible to vote for its initiative, and this will be one of the main topics of talks which top Serbian officials will hold at the fringes of the general debate, to be held from September 23 to October 1, in which presidents of UN member states and heads of governments will participate.
