Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic and Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia-Montenegro Maurizio Massari met today to discuss judicial reform, corruption, combating organised crime and war crimes trials before Serbian courts, which was described at the meeting as a priority for the ministry, the European Union, and the international community.
Stojkovic said OSCE has provided significant assistance but added that Serbia needs enforceable legislation, an objective that calls for a gradual approach.
He said the Serbian government and the Ministry of Justice will promote the rule of law and announced the passing of crucial legislation to ensure autonomy of courts and prosecutors.
Massari said domestic trials of war criminals are essential, adding that OSCE will double its efforts and assistance to Serbia's courts which are to handle these trials. According to Massari, cooperation with the Hague tribunal is also very important, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
