Retail prices in Serbia in August inched up 0.6 percent compared with the previous month, with the prices of goods going down 0.1 percent but services rising 2.5 percent. Compared with December 2003, retail prices were up 7.3 percent in August this year, the Serbian Statistical Office has said.
The cost of living in Serbia in August rose 0.3 percent against July, and 7.7 percent compared with December 2003, according to the statement today. The discrepancy between the increase in the cost of living and the rise in retail prices was due to different impacts of hikes in the prices of different items on the overall index.
The prices of agricultural products in August were 2.5 percent lower than in July, with a seasonal drop in prices of most fruits and vegetables but also a significant hike in the price of eggs, reads the statement.
Food products went up 1.3 percent, with the prices of milk, sugar, and meat recording a noticeable increase against the previous month.
The prices of tobacco rose 3.7 percent on the average on hikes in the prices of some types of cigarettes, while the prices of alcoholic drinks were 1.1 percent higher than in July. The prices of non-alcoholic drinks also recorded an increase in August.
The prices of non-food products went down 0.9 percent on the average on changed electricity prices.
The prices of services rose 2.5 percent on the average, thanks largely to higher car insurance prices. The prices of other services did not see a significant increase, reads the statement.
