The Ministry issued a statement saying that the claim of the Montenegrin minister is not based on objective facts and that the main difficulty which holds back the process of accession to the WTO and the launching of negotiations with the European Union on stabilisation and association process is the creation of a single market of Serbia and Montenegro (joint customs and joint mechanisms of trade politics), which is stipulated by the Constitutional Charter, but not fully completed.
The Ministry stressed that the Serbian government has launched a number of initiatives to solve the issue since the accession to the WTO is one of its foreign policy priorities. The government and appropriate ministries have taken all institutional, legislative and technical measures necessary for the process to develop successfully.
One of the measures were adoption and sending of a large document which contained answers to questions of WTO members concerning the Memorandum on trade politics, which is the first phase of the accession.
Also, the Serbian government established a special commission for WTO accession, tasked with preparing necessary documents. In cooperation with the Serbia-Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government and the ministries increased cooperation with WTO members in order to speed up the accession process.
