In a written statement, Kostunica said that he appreciates that finally, after a long period of waiting, Rehn has openly stated that the EU supports Kosovo and this is why it has sent its EULEX mission to Kosovo.
I say that I appreciate that Rehn has conveyed the EU’s response because it had become inappropriate to keep hiding the EU’s stance and the present goals of Brussels regarding Kosovo, said the Prime Minister.
He said that despite the EU’s stance, Serbia must strongly insist that only in its entirety with its province of Kosovo-Metohija may Serbia continue with the process of EU integration, and that following the May 11 elections, the new government must begin talks with the EU in a responsible manner, defending fundamental national interests.
In any case, today’s statement by the EU Enlargement Commissioner confirms that nobody in Serbia has the right to disregard the Serbian Parliament’s Resolution and sign any agreement with the EU, said Kostunica.
According to Kostunica, we must wait for the new parliament to be formed and the new government which will have the nation’s mandate to resolve issues which are of the greatest importance for Serbia’s future.
The Serbian Prime Minister also said that the position taken by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner today that recognition of Kosovo by EU member countries is not a defeat for Serbia, rather a beginning which facilitates Serbia’s entry to the EU, does not even deserve the worst of comments and is simply intended to belittle Serbia.
