Appearing on RTV B92, Kostunica said that Serbia’s place is in the EU, but that it should enter the union in a normal way like any other country. He added that he opposes the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU under current circumstances because before the signing it must be undoubtedly determined within which borders the EU recognises Serbia.
According to him, Article 135 of the initialled SAA indeed speaks about Serbia as a whole, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, but it is not known whether the SAA will be offered for signing in the same form.
Even if the agreement guarantees Serbia’s territorial integrity in accordance with Resolution 1244, Serbia should ask for additional guarantees of its sovereignty, stated the Prime Minister.
We must sit down and talk with them and remove all doubts, he added.
Kostunica stressed that there are no reasons why an issue of such huge importance for Serbia should not be discussed, particularly if we bear in mind that other problems have been debated with the EU in the past.
