Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica requested today from the European Union to start examining the legitimacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), following the acquittal of the former leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army Ramus Haradinaj.
Kostunica told the Tanjug news agency that since the EU does not have any special comment concerning the awarding of Ramus Haradinaj for the crimes he committed, it will have to seriously examine the legitimacy of the ICTY.
If the EU ignores grave violations of law and overt mocking of justice committed by this tribunal, Serbia has to be the one to question its work, he said and added that Serbian citizens rightfully feel resentment towards this tribunal.
The Serbian Prime Minister recalled that for the EU, the ICTY has been the main measure for determining the level of Serbia’s cooperation with the EU, especially in the case of continuation of talks on Serbia’s EU accession.
That is why it has to be cleared up with the EU whether the ICTY can still be considered a legitimate court after the acquittal of Haradinaj.
The Serbian Prime Minister asked how such a court can be still relevant in any sense whatsoever for determining relations between Serbia and the EU, and underlined that these are more than important questions that require concrete and real answers.
