EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said today in Brussels that the signing of the political agreement between the EU and Serbia, previously announced for February 7, will be postponed.
Rehn explained at a press conference that the reason for the postponement is that Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic has the mandate to sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA), but instead of that the EU last week offered Serbia
the interim political agreement, so he has to get new authorisation from the government.
He underlined that the invitation to sign the political agreement is still on the table, when Serbia is ready for it.
According to Rehn, the agreement offers more than the SAA, for example visa abolition for Serbian citizens.
This is why the EU has invited Serbia to sign the agreement, which provides a framework for political dialogue, free trade, visa abolition and student exchange which is particularly important for Serbian citizens, said Rehn.
He said that in his opinion Serbia has met almost all conditions in cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and on February 18 at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels he will once again advocate the signing of the SAA with Serbia.
