Addressing Serbian parliament members, Jeremic said that the law on foreign affairs will enable institutional reform of diplomacy which in the past decades suffered erosion due to disintegration of the state, isolation and sanctions. However, the situation is looking up because serious structural reforms are underway which will soon give good results.
This law, which is modern and efficient, will enable the creation of a service in accordance with the European environment and Serbia's European plans.
Today there is a great pressure on Serbia and that is a challenge we are not trying to avoid and which we must resolve successfully. That is why we must disregard ideological and party differences and support this bill together, the Minister said and underlined that the adoption of this law would be another proof of statehood and respect for parliament.
The bill on foreign affairs regulates jurisdiction of state organs in that field, competencies and organisation of the Ministry of foreign affairs and the procedure of deciding to open and close diplomatic representative offices of Serbia.
According to this law, the Ministry can propose to the government to establish or terminate diplomatic relations with other states, inclusion in international organisations and integrations, adoption of a strategy of development of foreign affairs and other measures used for defining the government's foreign policy.
