Tadic pointed out that only EU accession can satisfy Serbian economic and national interests, adding that preservation of political stability would be the prerequisite of progress toward the EU and a condition without which this strategic goal could not be achieved.
According to him, the biggest obstacle on the EU road is the unsolved status of Kosovo-Metohija, and there is no dilemma that solving the problem of the southern Serbian province is in the interest of maintaining security of the region as well as the whole Europe.
Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic expressed expectation that the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) will be signed by the end of January 2008 at the latest.
He also expressed hope Serbia will join the White Schengen List in the second half of 2008 during France’s EU presidency and that the country will get accession candidate status.
I believe that in the first few months of this government’s term in office we have shown dedication to the European agenda, but when we speak of Serbia’s perspectives, what we need is cooperation with the EU and we will do everything to meet the necessary terms, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed.
Djelic also said to his European colleagues they can count on Serbia and expressed hope that the European Serbia will be able to count on Europe.
He stressed that the process of decision-making on the future status of Kosovo should not be confused with Serbia’s European integration and also warned that a possible proclamation of Kosovo independence and unilateral recognition of that move by any state would weaken democratic forces in Serbia.
According to Djelic, Serbia will also show its European orientation by its true dedication to finalise cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
He announced the accelerated adoption of laws from the so-called European agenda and added that an extraordinary parliamentary session could be organised in February next year to address these regulations.
The conference “Serbia and EU – Strengthening European Perspectives” was organised by the EU Integration Office and the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence.
