After the talks with Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema, Jeremic said that it is not possible to resolve Kosovo status in a non-European way and then hope that such a solution will bring a European future to that area.
Jeremic stated that this issue must be resolved through compromise.
Serbia and Italy are completely committed to the negotiations process led by the troika of envoys, and we hope that it will be possible to reach a solution based on compromise, said Jeremic.
He said that during talks with D’Alema he conveyed his conviction that a compromise is possible if no artificial deadlines are set and that Belgrade is ready for a compromise.
However, the other side should also be willing for a compromise, and this will not happen as long as they are convinced that after December 10 there will be no need for any kind of dialogue and they will get what was once promised to them, which is independence, warned Jeremic.
He said that this is not a good way to motivate negotiating sides. He stressed that negotiations should be given a chance and all efforts should be made to make them successful.
According to Jeremic, all forms of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija are acceptable to Serbia as long as they are under the authority of the UN, and holding a peace conference in the province is only speculation so far.
He stressed that for Serbia it is of essential importance that the process of resolving this issue remains within the framework of the UN.
D'Alema said that Italy supports the negotiating process for Kosovo-Metohija conducted by the Contact Group's troika and a compromise solution that will be acceptable for both sides.
In Rome this morning Jeremic also met with President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Umberto Ranieri.
